Rogues called Ghost soldiers were encouraged to use their brains and talent to mislead, deceive, and befuddle the German Army. Many were recruited from art schools and talent agencies. In civilian life they had been artists, architects, actors, set designers, and engineers. The 23rd Headquarters Special Troops numbered only 1,100, but they used dummy tanks, fake aircraft, and giant speakers broadcasting the sounds of men and artillery to convince the Germans they faced a 30,000-man force. Their ruses pulled German units away from the real allied positions. Use your tools.
